Member-Initiated Disconnection of Service

Any member can disconnect electric service by submitting a Service Disconnect Request.

Cooperative-Initiated Disconnection of Service

Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative (GCEC) may disconnect electric service after proper notice for the following reasons:

  • Failure to pay an outstanding bill by the due date, within 26 days of the statement date.
  • Failure to pay a delinquent account or meet the terms of a Deferred Payment Plan.
  • Failure to comply with GCEC deposit and guarantee requirements.
  • Failure or refusal to provide GCEC reasonable access to electric facilities on the member’s property.
  • Failure or refusal to pay the amount due on the guaranteed account when a written Guaranty Agreement exists.
  • Violation of GCEC rules for the use of service that interferes with the service of others or the operation of non-standard equipment.
  • When a hazardous condition exists in the member’s installation or equipment.
  • If the meter tampering on a GCEC meter is found.

Disconnection Notice

GCEC will mail, hand deliver a termination notice and or send out a disconnection call at least 10 days before the disconnect date with information presented in both English and Spanish. The cutoff day may not fall on a holiday or weekend and will be adjusted to the next business day, unless a dangerous condition exists.

Disconnection Without Notice

GCEC may disconnect service immediately without notice if a dangerous condition exists, and will remain disconnected as long as the condition exists. If service is connected without authority following termination of service for nonpayment, GCEC may disconnect without notice. In instances where meter tampering is found, GCEC may terminate service immediately without notice.

Postponement of Disconnection for Medical Conditions

GCEC will not disconnect service to a permanent residential meter when the account is delinquent if an individual living at the residence has a medical condition that relies on electricity. To avoid termination, the member must have

  • The attending physician must contact GCEC within 16 days of the billing statement date
  • GCEC must receive a written statement from the physician or health care provider within 26 days of the bill statement date
  • The member completes a Deferred Payment Plan

For members needing to submit these documents, they must be resubmitted every year.

Completion of these requirements will postpone disconnection for nonpayment due to a medical condition for no more than 63 days from the billing statement date.

Member Obligation

Service disconnection does not relieve the member from any financial obligation or legal action. The member still has the obligation to pay for charges related to the disconnected account and GCEC may take action to recover any costs.

Service Reconnection

Service can be reconnected once all outstanding and delinquent bills, applicable deposits, and all fees are paid, and any safety issues are resolved.
